Veganuary is the perfect time to explore the world of plant-based eating, and you can find plenty of vegan food in Plymouth. Whether you’re a seasoned vegan or just trying to eat more plant-based foods this January, there is something for everyone.
Plymouth has a growing population of fully vegan restaurants and a plethora of plant-based options in the city centre and at Sutton Harbour. You don’t have to miss out this Veganuary!
Coffee
While not vegan food related – if you’re keen on your coffee, it’s really easy to find places with milk alternatives. Alfresco, the coffee cart on the cobbles, as well as The Cornish Bakery offer oat, almond, soya and more. Why not try out each one this month and see which you like best? Whether you’re having a latte, a flat white or a cappuccino – alternative milks still make for a great, delicious coffee.
You can also find these options at Jacka Bakery and Fig&Thyme along Southside Street—keep an eye out for their plant-based treats to complement your coffee too!
Miller & Carter
Steakhouse? Yes – but with vegan options! You don’t have to miss out on a family trip to Miller & Carter if you’re giving Veganuary a go this year. They have plenty of tempting options from starters to dessert. With olives and spiced cauliflower wings to a plant-based burger filled with avocado, cheese and pickled pink onions, you’ll have to make room for their poached pear lightly infused with saffron and creamy coconut sorbet.
The Harbour and Harbourside’s Barbican Fish Bar
Craving fish and chips? If you are going to find vegan fish and chips anywhere—you can bet that Sutton Harbour has some on offer. The Harbour’s chips are vegan friendly and there are different things to try depending on whether you dine in the restaurant or take your food on the go.
Their vegan fish is made from battered banana blossom and it’s almost too good to be true. Incredibly close to the real thing, this is a must try for Veganuary. It comes with mushy peas and vegan tartare. If you are taking away, you can also tuck into the vegan calamari made from breaded, juicy king oyster mushrooms and don’t forget the curry sauce!
If you’re dining in, try their salt and pepper squid rings made from juicy king oyster mushrooms complete with red chillies, spring onions and black pepper with Asian sauce. They also have a vegan burger with salad and slaw.
Over at Harbourside’s Barbican Fish Bar (which is also entirely gluten free), the chips are also vegan-friendly. You also get to choose from vegan sausages which can be battered or not, homemade pea fritters and a falafel burger plus the classic sides and sauces.
Armado Lounge
The Armado Lounge has an entirely vegan menu complete with brunch, main dishes, tapas, sides and desserts. It is easily one of the most accessible places to find vegan food in Plymouth. You will be spoilt for choice and it’s a great option if you’re dining out with people who aren’t giving Veganuary a go.
If you’re worried about missing brunch this month – worry no more. At the Armado Lounge you can bag a big vegan breakfast featuring a combination of falafel, veggie sausages, vegan bacon, hashbrowns, baked beans, greens, roasted tomatoes, mushroom and toast. If you aren’t full just reading that, they also have avocado on a toasted ciabatta, bacon and sausage sandwiches and toast with jam, marmalade or marmite.
For later on in the day they offer vegan burgers, burritos and flatbreads. The tapas consist of a garlic flatbread, patatas bravas with roasted garlic mayo, black beans, sweetcorn, hummus, bang bang fried cauliflower and guacamole!
If you still have room, go for a passionfruit semifreddo which is a biscuit-based gelato slice with berry compote, or a fruity flapjack, a chocolate and raspberry torte or carrot cake.
Supha’s Street Food Emporium
Supha’s offer a huge menu with options to have their pan-Asian dishes made with tofu. Many of the dishes are also naturally gluten free too.
From satay sticks, samosas and tofu tempura, vegans and Veganuary participants can enjoy classics such as pad Thai, massaman curries and sweet and sour. Head down to check out the menu for yourself and ask the helpful servers about your options for plant-based food.
Boston Tea Party
Boston Tea Party have lots of vegan choices for brunch or a late lunch. Their cooked breakfasts consist of vegan sausages, sweetcorn fritters, homemade hashbrowns, scrambled tofu, slow-roasted tomato, spinach, mushrooms, beans and toast. Or grab a lighter brunch with one of their breakfast muffins with a vegan sausage patty, homemade hash brown, seasonal greens, vegan cheese and American mustard.
If it’s closer to lunchtime you can get a pesto, vegan mozzarella and mushroom toastie or a plant burger with cheese, gherkins and burger sauce that comes with fries.
Wash it all down with their smoothies and enjoy a coffee and a cake with non-dairy alternatives.
The Plymouth Stable
The Stable have a whole range of plant-based and vegetarian pizzas which can be made vegan. Their four standouts are a proper margherita with vegan mozzarella, basil and a sprinkle of Cornish sea salt. The G.O.A.T which is a cheese substitute for goat’s cheese and mozzarella with roasted garlic mushrooms, pine nuts, spinach and caramelised onion.
