Summer may attract the biggest crowds, but autumn reveals a different side of Sutton Harbour. As the season changes, Plymouth’s historic waterfront looks forward to September seafood celebrations, autumnal evenings and the first glimpse of the festive season.
With cobbled streets, centuries of maritime history and plenty of places to eat, drink and explore beside the water, Sutton Harbour is an ideal starting point for an autumn day in Britain’s Ocean City. Here are a few ways to experience it between September and November this year.
St Luke’s Guiding Lights – until 13 September 2026
The first half of the month offers a final opportunity to complete St Luke’s Guiding Lights trail, a colourful public art trail featuring more than 40 individually designed lighthouse sculptures across Plymouth’s streets and waterfront.
The trail runs until Sunday 13 September and raises funds and awareness for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, through the purchase of trail maps from St Luke’s shops and app downloads. With its strong connection to Plymouth’s maritime heritage, Sutton Harbour provides a fitting setting from which to begin or continue your search for the sculptures.
See how many you can find before they disappear. It is an enjoyable way for families, friends and visitors to explore different parts of the city while supporting an important local cause.
Seafest Plymouth – 12–13 September 2026
Seafood lovers can also look forward to Seafest Plymouth, returning to the city’s waterfront from 12–13 September.
The annual celebration brings seafood, entertainment and family activities to locations across the waterfront. Sutton Harbour places visitors close to the heart of the action and provides a fitting backdrop for the celebrations.
Begin your Seafest visit with a walk across the cobbles, exploring local, independent trade stalls selling handmade items, gifts and food. Enjoy watching talented chefs whip up fresh seafood dishes live at the Cookery Theatre throughout the day.
Take part in the Seafest Trail by picking up a trail sheet from the Tourist Information Centre or the Fishermen’s Mission stand and discover activities across the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. Then, round out the day by heading to Quay Square to learn all about marine conservation and sustainability and how you can get involved with the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park.
Lunch should naturally make the most of the city’s coastal location. Restaurants around Sutton Harbour serve everything from locally landed fish and classic seafood dishes to relaxed family favourites. Booking ahead is recommended during major event weekends.
Red Bull Up The Mast – 26 September 2026
For an altogether different waterfront spectacle, Red Bull Up The Mast returns to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour on Saturday 26 September.
This unusual, high-energy knockout competition challenges daring participants to race along a slippery greased mast and capture the flag, avoiding the water below. Speed, balance and determination are all essential, while spectators can expect dramatic slips, last-second saves and plenty of excitement.
The free event is set to bring a lively crowd, making Sutton Harbour the place to be for anyone looking for a thrilling afternoon beside the water.
WorldStar 2026 – 26 September 2026
The same day also marks the start of WorldStar 2026, a major new around-the-world sailing challenge organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club.
Solo and double-handed sailors will depart from Plymouth Sound at midday before embarking on a non-stop circumnavigation rounding the world’s three great capes. The demanding race is designed as an ultimate test of seamanship, endurance and adventure.
Plymouth’s proud sailing heritage makes the city a natural home for the competition. Visitors spending the day at Sutton Harbour can enjoy the atmosphere around the waterfront before watching the fleet begin its extraordinary global challenge.
Plymouth Harbour 10K – 27 September 2026
September’s busy events programme continues on Sunday 27 September with the Devon Mind Plymouth Harbour 10K.
The community run starts at Mount Batten and follows a scenic waterfront route around Cattewater Harbour, taking in Turnchapel, Laira Bridge and stretches of the South West Coast Path. It finishes at Commercial Wharf in the heart of the historic Barbican.
Open to runners of different abilities, the event raises much-needed funds and awareness for Devon Mind’s local mental health services. Visitors who are not running can still support the participants and enjoy the race-day atmosphere as they approach the finish.
After a busy weekend of waterfront action, Sutton Harbour is an ideal place to celebrate with a well-earned lunch, drink or evening meal beside the water.
October: discover maritime mysteries and hidden history
When October arrives, Sutton Harbour takes on a uniquely atmospheric character. Darker evenings, narrow lanes and centuries-old buildings make this the perfect month to explore the Barbican’s stories, legends and lesser-known corners.
Start the day with a visit to the Mayflower Museum, where you can learn about the history of Plymouth Sound. Continue through the historic streets surrounding the harbour, paying attention to the old cobbled pathways, merchants’ houses and clues to Plymouth’s seafaring past.
The National Marine Aquarium, located beside Sutton Harbour, is another excellent all-weather option and is home to thousands of marine animals. Plus, they host Halloween events each year so keep an eye on their website and social media to be the first to know.
As evening falls, embrace the season’s mysterious mood with local tales of smugglers, sailors and maritime folklore. A guided history or ghost walk can add another dimension to familiar streets, while an early dinner or warming drink provides a cosy conclusion to an October adventure.
Halloween events and half-term activities may be announced closer to the date, so check our Events page closer to the date.
November: enjoy waterfront walks and the first festive glow
November is the month for enjoying simple pleasures. Crisp walks, warming food and lights reflected across the water give Sutton Harbour a special appeal as Plymouth begins the countdown to Christmas.
Wrap up and begin with a stroll around the harbour, stopping to watch the working waterfront or photograph the boats against the autumn sky. Continue towards the Barbican’s independent shops and galleries, where you can browse art, locally made gifts and distinctive Christmas presents away from the busiest high-street crowds.
When it is time to warm up, choose one of the cafés, pubs or restaurants around Sutton Harbour. November suits a leisurely lunch, coffee and cake, or an evening meal overlooking the marina. Seafood remains an obvious choice, but visitors will also find international flavours, traditional favourites and relaxed places suitable for the whole family.
As Plymouth’s Christmas programme begins, Sutton Harbour also makes a convenient base for combining festive events elsewhere in the city with shopping and dining by the water. Event dates and seasonal opening hours can change, so check the latest information with venues before your visit. Look forward to the Santa Fun Run and the Barbican Christmas Lights Switch-On!
