August is peak cruising season on the South West coast, and few ports make a more rewarding stop than Plymouth. If you are working your way along the coast this summer, a visitor berth at Sutton Harbour drops you right into the heart of the Barbican, the city’s historic waterfront quarter, with everything you could want within a few steps of your pontoon.
A berth in the heart of the city
Where many marinas leave you a bus ride from anywhere, Sutton Harbour puts you in the thick of it. Step ashore and the cobbled streets of the Barbican, the Mayflower Steps, and a wealth of restaurants, bars and independent shops are right there. It is one of the great pleasures of cruising: tie up, step off, and be at dinner within minutes.
Easy to reach, whatever the tide
Arriving is simple. Our double lock gates mean there is always depth of water at the berths, so you are not left circling outside waiting for the tide. For up to three hours either side of high water the gates sit open in a free-flow period, and outside those times the lock is staffed around the clock. Call ahead on VHF Channel 12 and the team will see you safely in, and there is fuel and a pump-out on site for topping up before you press on.
A perfect base for exploring
Plymouth is more than a stopover. From Sutton Harbour you are ideally placed to explore Plymouth Sound, take the short hop across to Cawsand, or rest up before a longer passage west to Fowey and beyond. Many visiting crews find they stay a night longer than they planned.
