As we start to say goodbye to summer, we can begin to look forward to what autumn and winter have to offer. This time of year, Plymouth and Sutton Harbour turn into a hub of seasonal activity. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a day trip, or you’re local and looking to soak up some seasonal charm, there are plenty of things to do in Plymouth this autumn. We have handpicked the highlights to help you enjoy everything our historic harbour and its surrounding areas have to offer.
Seafest (13-14 September)
The mighty Seafest will return to Sutton Harbour this September for a two-day celebration of all things seafood. The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership have teamed up with the Plymouth Sound National Marine Park to expand the event across the entire waterfront with plenty of exciting activities.
Expect live chef demonstrations, fresh seafood dishes from local restaurants, a Seafest trail and plenty of activities for kids down at Sutton Harbour and the Barbican.
Set sail for Guitarfest (5-6) September
Just because summer is ending, it doesn’t mean the festivals are! Hop aboard the Plymouth Boat Trips ferry from the Barbican Landing Stage and take the scenic route over to Cawsand to attend Guitarfest 2025.
This classical guitar event brings together talented musicians against a stunning backdrop by the sea for a relaxing and exciting weekend.
Red Bull Up The Mast Competition
On the 27th September, Red Bull are hosting their famous Up The Mast competition at Sutton Harbour. Contestants must attempt to climb a greasy pole to be the fastest to grab a flag in this adrenaline fuelled competition. Red Bull are inviting students from Plymouth universities and the local community to take part and be crowned the winner. Taking place between 2pm and 5pm, the event is open to all participants over 18 and is free to spectate with entertainment and live music throughout the day.
Plymouth Seafood Trail (3-18) October
After the excitement of Seafest, seafood lovers are in for another treat in October. The Plymouth Seafood Trail will explore some of the city’s best independent restaurants and eateries, many of which are located around the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. Sutton Harbour’s tenant, the award-winning Supha’s Street Food Emporium, is being included in this year’s Seafood Trail.
Being coined ‘a local flavour adventure’, those taking part will get to enjoy mouth-watering meals and meet the passionate chefs behind the dishes.
Bonus picks
Waterfront dining
While the weather is still mild and the evenings aren’t quite as short, there is still time to enjoy all of Sutton Harbour’s surrounding waterfront dining spots. Whether sitting inside or dining alfresco, they provide the perfect cosy setting to watch the golden glow of bobbing boats in the marina.
Seaside walks
One of the best things to do in Plymouth at this time of year is one of the simplest. Wrap up warm, grab a coffee to go from Alfresco or Creamer’s Street Barista and start your walk along the seafront or the South West Coast Path. Watch the water with views out to Drake’s Island and beyond and take in that crisp breeze. End back at the cobbles of the Barbican and Sutton Harbour for a well-deserved lunch.
Attractions
If the weather is particularly mild, you can still make a day out of a trip to Sutton Harbour by sheltering in the National Marine Aquarium or the Mayflower Museum. Learn about the past, present and future of the Plymouth Sound.
Southside Street is bursting with interesting, independent shops. As you walk down the street, something is bound to catch your eye as you pop in and out of each one. Enjoy impressive art galleries, glass art, local treats, unique gifts and artisan finds.
