Step into Spring at Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour

While the weather may feel like otherwise, March marks the start of spring in Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour! We’ve got the start of British Summer Time and longer evenings to look forward to. Plus, we’ve got Mother’s Day and Pancake Day to kick off a busy spring time events calendar. Plus, expect plenty of fresh spring menus with delicious dishes across the Barbican and Sutton Harbour.

So, dust off the cobwebs, embrace the milder weather and get ready to step into spring.

British Summer Time

On the 30th March, the clocks will spring forward an hour leading to much lighter evenings across the UK. This leap marks the start of spring with summer hot on its heels. Longer, milder evenings are perfect for visiting Sutton Harbour and the Barbican.

Take a late walk around the harbour or enjoy some drinks outside by the water at The Ship, The Three Crowns or Rakuda bar. Grab some dinner-to-go at Cap’n Jaspers or The Harbour and enjoy it with a view of the sun setting over the Plymouth Sound.

Alternatively, grab a seat and dine alfresco at Supha’s or Rockfish to mark the start of the warmer seasons!

Mother’s Day

The 30th March is also Mother’s Day and Sutton Harbour is a great place to come and celebrate with the maternal figure in your life. If you are early birds looking to make the most of your day, why not grab a coffee from Alfresco? They also offer great Italian sweet treats that are the perfect accompaniment to a frothy flat white or a creamy cappuccino.

Looking to relax? Daisy’s Tea Room and Coffee Shop have got afternoon tea down to an art. Their friendly atmosphere and variety of choices make it a great place to celebrate this Mother’s Day.

Southside Street is a great place to go shopping if you’re looking to treat that special person. Unique, handmade and thoughtful gifts can be found along the entire stretch of this charming street. From art to jewellery, and even sweet treats, there is something to suit all tastes.

Keeping Mother’s Day a family affair is easily done. Why not head to the National Marine Aquarium to enjoy a memorable day out? With different ‘zones’ featuring all kinds of underwater inhabitants, it’s easy to enjoy an afternoon here.

If dinner is on you, there is an abundance of restaurants to be found at Sutton Harbour. With menus to suit all tastes and dietary requirements, you could book at the likes of Miller & Carter or The Stable to enjoy great views of the harbour while you dine.

Perhaps celebrating Mother’s Day is best done with a relaxing evening sitting by the water enjoying a glass or two of wine. HonkyTonk Wine Library’s atmosphere is sophisticated but comfortable with a knowledgeable team on hand to provide you with the perfect drinks to cheers to.

Pancake Day

Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, falls on the 4th March in 2025. Why not let someone else do the flipping this year? There are plenty of cafés at Sutton Harbour offering the perfect pancakes, not just this spring, but all year round. Plus, you can pick from a range of mouth-watering toppings too.

Boston Tea Party offer buttermilk pancakes with either smoked, streaky bacon or a blueberry compote with natural yoghurt, both topped with maple syrup.

If you’re looking for a challenge, Armado Lounge also offer buttermilk bacon pancakes in a triple-stack. You can also choose from their berries and maple mascarpone pancakes too.

Over at Mint Café & Bar, you can enjoy a classic fluffy pancake with golden syrup or opt for something a little different with chocolate and strawberries.

Whatever type of pancake you are craving this year; you will be spoilt for choice at Sutton Harbour.

Easter and beyond

Looking beyond March and into April we can start to look forward to Easter and the Easter holidays! Spring will have certainly made its mark by then and we can look forward to a regular schedule of events.

As the summer approaches, we can look ahead to Pirates Weekend, the British Firework Championships and SeaFest.
