Get ready for Christmas in Plymouth this November

As Plymouth begins the warm up for December’s Christmas countdown, festive events are beginning to pop up across the city and waterfront. Expect a series of dazzling events and light displays! If you’re ready to embrace the holiday spirit, Plymouth is the place to be. Here is a guide of things you won’t want to miss this November.

Christmas Light Switch-Ons

In Plymouth you get not one, not two, but three chances to catch a Christmas lights switch-on! On the 14th November, the Christmas calendar kicks off with the city centre and Drake Circus lights being turned on.

From 3:30pm, you will find entertainment and activities happening in Drake Circus. The lights will be turned on at 5pm with the help of some festive characters.

Then, if you head outside to the piazza in the city centre, you can get stuck into a whole programme of even more entertainment. From live music, a visit from Santa and the Lord Mayor and theatre and dance performances, the lights will be switched on between 6:20pm and 6:30pm. Watch as the city centre lights up to mark the start of the festive season.

On the 16th November, it’s the Barbican’s turn. From 12pm until 6pm, the day will be full of family-friendly festive fun with performances, Santa’s Grotto, storytelling, a dog show and more. There will also be plenty of stallholders to browse gifts, and local businesses will be open for food, refreshments and coffees. From 5pm, be prepared for the big reveal as the Barbican and Sutton Harbour light up the night. As the lights sparkle on the water and the carolling kicks off, it really will start to feel like Christmas!

Christmas Shopping

Late night shopping begins on the 14th November and will continue every Thursday until 19th December. Many shops will be staying open later every day and late night shopping can be enjoyed every Thursday until 9pm—perfect for grabbing those last minute gifts.

In addition, the Christmas Market is opening on the 28th November and can be found in the city centre until the 15th December. Bringing the magic of a European-style festive market to Devon, stroll through the wooden cabins selling gifts, crafts and delicious food. Be sure to check out the German bratwurst, sweet treats like crepes, donuts and churros and the drinks on offer at the Bavarian Bar.

For a more cosy and unique shopping experience, look no further than Sutton Harbour and the Barbican. The historic waterfront area offers charming boutiques, galleries and an array of independent shops. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind gift, then the Barbican has something for every type of shopper.

While you’re shopping under the glow of the festive Christmas lights, why not stop for a festive treat in one of the many cafes or restaurants dotted along the cobbles? Whether it’s a warming hot chocolate from The Cornish Bakery or a glass of mulled wine at the Armado Lounge, you’ll be able to soak in the festivities while overlooking the scenic harbour.

Festive Events

If you’re looking to get really stuck in to the festivities, join HonkyTonk Wine Library for a festive book signing and reading event.  Kyra Lennon is the author of Re-Writing Christmas, a story about the magic of a Christmas in Devon. This will be a chance to hear the author talk about her inspiration and answer questions along with a book signing. Stay and enjoy a glass of wine while you read and soak in the festive atmosphere.

Over at The Box, you can make your very own wreath with local artist Karen Evans. Using willow, evergreen foliage, dried oranges, herbs and cinnamon sticks you will be shown how to make the perfect wreath for your home. All equipment will be provided, so just bring along your most festive and creative ideas!
