Plates of seafood from Rockfish Sutton Harbour

Fin-tastic restaurants serving up seafood in Sutton Harbour

With its long fishing history, it’s no surprise that Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, is home to a fantastic range of restaurants serving up some of the best seafood in the region. Sutton Harbour is a major fishing port for the South West and home to the second largest fish market in the UK, Plymouth Fisheries, which lands more than 6,000 tonnes of fish each year.

Local restaurants benefit from easy access to fresh local produce landed at Plymouth Fisheries, with a number of independent fish merchant businesses located at the fish market supplying them directly with freshly caught fish and shellfish. Along the harbour, there’s a fin-tastic variety of eateries which offer up a delicious range of fish dishes to enjoy in a truly picturesque location.

Here is a breakdown of the top restaurants in Sutton Harbour serving seafood.

Rockfish

Neighbouring the National Marine Aquarium, Rockfish is well-known across the region for its tasty, fresh, locally caught seafood. The restaurant has large indoor and outdoor seating areas with their deck area providing the perfect alfresco dining spot looking out across the waterfront.

New this year at Rockfish is their outdoor Salcombe Brewery Bar offering a variety of locally crafted beers. Rockfish is currently offering Sutton Harbour Marina berth holders a free drink from the bar when ordering a meal – make sure you bring your marina card to redeem your complimentary drink.

Rockfish is a perfect spot for seafood lovers and a great family-friendly restaurant, open Monday, 4pm-9pm, Tuesday-Saturday between 12noon and 4pm and 5pm-9pm and Sunday 12noon-5pm. The outside deck is open daily 12noon-4pm and 5pm-9pm.

Supha’s Street Food Emporium

Supha’s Street Food Emporium is located at East Quay House with enviable views across the marina and serves up fabulous seasonal and fresh cuisine with a street-food style. The food has strong Asian influences with dishes from Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam on the menu. Supha’s offers a variety of choices with many vegan, vegetation and gluten free options, and fish is well represented with freshly caught seafood featuring heavily on the menu.

Supha’s works with local seafood supplier Moby Nicks, located at Plymouth Fisheries – just a minute’s walk from the restaurant – to stock its fresh fish counter and ensure changing specials feature the catch of the day. Open six days a week, Tuesday 12pm-9pm, Wednesday-Saturday 12pm-10pm and Sunday 12pm-9pm. Check out their website to find out more and to book.

Wine and dine at HonkyTonk Wine Library and tuck into their selection of deli foods, which includes fresh seafood throughout the menu and on the popular tasting boards. There’s also plenty of drinks to choose from thanks to the extensive collection on offer including wines, rum and beers.

The wine lounge has breathtaking views across Sutton Harbour Marina with outdoor seating providing the perfect spot for a sunny day. With seafood featured heavily on the menu, the real showstopper is the HonkyTonk Seafood Platter which serves two to four people. The platter includes fresh shellfish and seasonal fish that is readily available and locally caught. If you need a drink recommendation with your meal, the staff and HonkyTonk will be able to advise the best wine to complement your dish. Find out more and book on their website.

Miller and Carter Steakhouse

The Miller and Carter Steakhouse not only serves 30-day aged British and Irish steaks, but the restaurant also has a range of fish dishes on their menu. From starters including calamari and scallops to main courses including salmon and cod, the steakhouse also has a vegetarian menu and an exciting range of desserts.

Miller and Carter is open Monday-Saturday, midday until 11pm and Sunday from midday-10pm. Booking is advised – this can be done on their website or over the phone.

Local Barbican restaurants

Adjacent to the harbour is the Barbican quarter which is home to more local seafood restaurants including Platter’s Seafood Restaurant – which receives daily deliveries of fresh seafood, locally caught and landed at Plymouth Fisheries, as well as the award-winning Boathouse Café, which catches its own fish, and The Village Restaurant, which is one of Plymouth’s oldest seafood restaurants.

You can find out more about the restaurants on the Barbican here.
