Christmas in Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour 2025

Sleigh bells are just around the corner which means Christmas in Plymouth is almost here! This is always a magical time in the city with lots of great community events, decorations, Christmas parties and festive menus to try out.

If this is your first Christmas in the city, or you are just looking for some inspiration, we have pulled together a list of everything happening around Sutton Harbour and the Barbican this December.

Festive fun

Plymouth’s Christmas events kicked off last month with the brilliant Christmas lights switch-ons in both the city centre and across the Barbican and Sutton Harbour. Don’t worry if you missed them, or you’re looking to feel even more festive. There is still plenty more to come this month, starting with the Barbican Christmas trail!

This year’s theme is ‘The Grinch Adds a Pinch’ and trail-goers must search for clues and Christmas puddings in the area…and there will also be a twist from the mischievous Grinch. This event is suitable for all ages and a great free, family-friendly activity to make the most of the festive season. Trail maps can be picked up from the Tourist Information Centre (closed on Sundays). The trail ends on the 4th January giving you plenty of time to have a go.

The iconic Santa Fun Run returns to the Barbican on the 7th December in aid of local charities Jeremiah’s Journey and Shekinah. Participants of all ages can enter and take part in either the fun run, jolly jog or wonderful walk of either a 2.5km or 5km route. If you’d just like to spectate, the event begins from 11am. Runners, suits are included in your registration fee, so make sure to register.

Plymouth Boat Trips are also hosting their Christmas Party cruises this year! As usual, there will be a family-friendly cruise for kids and one for adults.

For families, catch your cruise on the 6th, 13th or 14th December for a festive disco, party games, face paintings and a visit from Santa! Tickets include a tea/coffee and a mince pie for adults and a soft drink and seasonal selection box for each child. Spaces can be booked here.

For adults only, there are cruises on the 6th and 13th December and every ticket includes a free drink. There will be festive tunes played by a DJ with a fully licensed bar on board. Book your tickets now for this unique Christmas party experience.

Christmas menus

If you’d like to leave the cooking to someone else this year, you can enjoy a delicious Christmas day dinner with all the trimmings right here in Plymouth. There are fantastic festive menus available across the waterfront up until the main event too.

You have two great choices for a delicious Christmas Day meal at Miller & Carter and The Ship. Whether you’re craving a classic roast turkey or want to go Ocean City style and try trout or monkfish, there are options to suit everyone. Plus, the whole family can be catered for with vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options. Be sure to book in advance!

All month long you can plan celebrations in the lead-up to the big day. The atmosphere at HonkyTonk Wine Library makes it perfect for a catch up with friends to enjoy great food sharing platters with a fantastic range of wines and great events.

Over at The Harbour they also have a stacked Christmas menu being served seven days a week until Christmas Eve. Dine in the restaurant with views of the harbour and the Christmas lights while you tuck in.

If you’re feeling brave enough, a walk around the harbour in the fresh winter air is a great way to walk off dinner and soothe full bellies!

Christmas cheers and high spirits

Whether it’s a Christmas party with colleagues, a catch-up with friends or a cosy festive drink with the family, Sutton Harbour has plenty of places to celebrate. The Ship (also dog friendly) offer indoor or outdoor seating with a great view of Guy’s Quay. From coffee and soft drinks to ales, beers, spirits and more, the fully stocked bar has something for everyone.

Bar Rakuda are known for their pizza but also their pints, cocktails and wines. Open day or night, you can always expect some live entertainment and a good time. With stunning harbour views, it’s the perfect place to raise a glass to the end of another year.

Christmas shopping

If you’re still hunting for gifts, the Barbican’s Southside Street is lined with independent shops offering something truly special. You’ll find unique items from local makers, artists and retailers such as paintings, glass decorations, jewellery and sweet treats.

The National Marine Aquarium are hosting their annual ocean friendly Christmas market on the 3rd December. This evening event is for adults only (5:30pm – 9:30pm) however the market is open for all existing aquarium guests between 3pm – 5:30pm.

Guests will be greeted with mulled wine and a festive snack before going on to explore the stalls and shop for Christmas gifts. There will also be a hands-on workshop and a chance to learn about how to have a sustainable Christmas. This event is free for annual passholders but you will still need to book a space.
