When the autumn gales start rolling up the Channel, every boat owner asks the same question: where will my boat be safest this winter? At Sutton Harbour Marina, on Plymouth’s historic Barbican, we have a small number of winter berths available this season, and they are in the most sheltered facility in the area.
Protected by Sutton Lock
Sutton Harbour sits behind Sutton Lock, which holds the water inside the harbour at a steady level whatever the tide is doing outside. When a south-westerly is pushing swell into Plymouth Sound, the water behind the lock gates stays calm. Your boat is not snatching at its lines on a falling tide or riding out a blow on an exposed mooring. It is sitting quietly in a basin protected from the worst of the winter weather.
Serviced berths for boats of 9 to 12 metres
Our winter berths are serviced berths for vessels between 9 and 12 metres. That covers a great many of the yachts and motor cruisers sailing from the South West, from a family cruiser to a well-loved offshore yacht. If your boat falls within that range, the team will happily talk you through what the berth includes and the dates it covers.
Close enough to keep an eye on her
A boat left alone for months tends to come out of winter with a few surprises. From a berth at Sutton Harbour you can call in at the weekend to check the lines and fenders, run the engine, air the cabin and make sure the bilges are dry, then stroll onto the Barbican for lunch in one of the restaurants or pubs on the quay. The marina office on Century Quay is right there too, and the team is on hand if anything needs attention.
And when a good day comes along
Winter in Plymouth is not all grey skies. When a bright, settled day turns up, you can lock out and have the Sound almost to yourself. Check the free flow times so you know when passage through the lock is on request, and call the Berthing Team on VHF Channel 12 before you set off.
